Auburn, Ala. - Auburn senior swimmers Kurt Cady and Doug Van Wie and junior Kara Denby were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large District Team, it was announced Thursday. Cady and Denby, both first team selections, will now be one of 10 male and female athletes from District IV that will be placed onto the national ballot for All-American selection. Van Wie was selected to the second team.
Cady, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., has a 3.62 cumulative grade point average in civil engineering and was part of the 2006 NCAA and SEC Championship teams. A three-time All-American, he swam the third leg on the SEC Champion 400 free relay this season and was named All-SEC for this performance. A College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-American, Cady has been on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and Auburn Dean's List three times. An Academic All-District IV second team honoree a year ago, Cady is a member of four Auburn honor societies.
Denby, a junior (academically) from Simi Valley, Calif., holds a 4.00 GPA in zoology. She earned five All-America honors as part of the 2006 NCAA Champion team and holds 11 honors to date. At this years NCAA Championship, she turned in three season high splits swimming on the 200 and 400 freestyle relay's (both finished third) and the 200 medley relay (finished fifth). A two-time CSCAA Academic All-American, she was awarded the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) "Outstanding Sophomore" award and been on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Denby is a member of four Auburn honor societies including the National College Athlete Honor Society.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Van Wie sports a 3.51 GPA in graphic design. A team co-captain on this year's NCAA and SEC Championship teams; he was runner-up at the national meet in the 100 backstroke. Van Wie concluded his collegiate career with 17 All-American honors, five SEC titles and a NCAA crown. A two-time CSCAA Academic All-American, Van Wie has been an Academic All-District IV the past two seasons. The Auburn record holder in the 100 back, Van Wie was a bronze medalist with the U.S. 800 free relay at the World University Games last summer.
Both Cady and Van Wie concluded their collegiate careers having been part of four NCAA and SEC Championship teams and owned a 31-0 dual meet record.
