Kelly Marx And Dan Mazzaferro Set To Compete In USA Diving Nationals

April 16, 2008

AUBURN - Auburn divers Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro return to action this week as the duo travels to Minneapolis, Minn. for the 2008 Speedo USA Diving Spring National Championships. The five-day competition is key for many divers across the country as it represents the final opportunity to qualify for this summer's Olympic Trials.

Mazzaferro, who has already qualified for Trials, will compete in the 10-meter platform competition and the synchronized platform, teaming up with Miami's J.J. Kinzbach. Marx is slated to compete on the 3-meter springboard.

"W had a very successful collegiate season with both divers winning SEC titles and scoring well at NCAAs," said head diving coach Jeff Shaffer. "This is an opportunity for Kelly and Dan to see where they are among all-age divers in an open format."

Shaffer said their performance at this meet and other national and international competitions through the summer will also serve as a barometer for training for the 2008-09 season.

"A strong performance this week is very important, but based on how we do and how we perform, it will be an indication of what we need to focus on this summer to further our skill and ability level for next year," said Shaffer.

Marx is the first to compete at the championship as the 3-meter preliminary and quarterfinal is scheduled for Thursday. Mazzaferro will dive in the platform and synchronized platform preliminaries and quarterfinals on Friday. Finals for both events are scheduled for Saturday.
