ATHENS, Ga.  – Auburn junior Caesar Garcia placed third with a score of 1193.94 on the platform while classmate Ashley Rubenstein scored an 897.24 to place eighth in the women’s 3-meter competition as the World Championships Team Trials wrapped up the third day of the four-day event at the Gabrielson Natatorium on Saturday.

Garcia came out of the preliminary round with a 600.15, which was the second-highest score behind Justin Dumais’ 623.70, who went on to win with a 1282.44. The third-place finish for Garcia qualifies him for the FINA Championships in May.

“Caesar did another great job today,” AU Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer said. “He was beat by an Olympian and one of our best divers. I am real proud of him.”

Rubenstein had scored a 470.49 in the prelims, which was the third-best score of the preliminary round behind eventual winner Rachelle Kunkel (1073.07) and Sara Hildebrand (1023.18).

“I was extremely pleased with Ashley’s performance today,” Shaffer said. “She put herself in the finals with Olympians and National Team members which shows the improvements she has made this year and helps to take the sting out of her missing NCAAs.”

The team trials conclude on Sunday with Garcia competing in the 3-meter competition.
