COLLEGE STATION, Texas –   The Auburn men’s swimming and diving team advanced 11 to day two finals as the Tigers hope to make a run at current leaders Texas before the day two comes to a close.

Auburn concluded day one with 141 points, trailing only Texas with 171.  Behind Auburn are Stanford (130), Florida (107) and Cal (103).

The championships are a three-day meet held, March 26-28, at the Texas A&M Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.

Auburn finished day two prelims advancing eight up and three down to Friday night finals.  Current leader Texas will have seven in A finals and three in consolations.  Third place Stanford advanced five and six.

The Auburn 200 MR team of Jared White (20.88), Michael Silva (23.27), Matt Targett (19.87) and Gideon Louw (18.56) swam to a new US Open and NCAA record time of 1:22.58 to surpass the previous mark of 1:23.24 set by Auburn in the 2008 Championships.

The Tigers led wire-to-wire in prelims and will look to claim the seventh 200 MR title in school history.    Auburn has won the event three of the past four seasons.

Junior Tyler McGill came out with guns blazing in the 100 fly prelims, setting new American and Auburn records with a 44.67.  The Champaign, Ill., native leads the Auburn charge for Friday night’s finals.  Senior Logan Madson hit a new career best, touching in at 45.33 to tie for the third fastest in prelims.

Seniors Jokob Andkjaer (46.05) and Matt Targett (46.11) placed 11th and 12th to advance to the consolation finals.

Auburn nearly put a fifth man down as Jordan Anderson placed 18th, swimming a 46.45.

Sophomore Adam Klein broke an 8-year-old Auburn record for his performance in the 100 breast, hitting the pad in 51.81.  Junior Michael Silva also made the A finals, swimming to a new career best 52.41 for a sixth-place prelim finish.

The old record of 52.62 was set by Dave Denniston in 2001, a mark that tied for the second oldest school record in the books.  Denniston still owns the Auburn 200 breast record, a 1:53.48 also set it 2001. Rowdy Gaines holds the oldest Auburn record to date.  The three-time Olympic Gold Medalist swam a 1:33.80 in the 200 backstroke at the 1981 SEC Championships.

Auburn underclassmen continued extended their strong performance into the 100 back, advancing three to Friday night’s A finals.  Sophomore Kohlton Norys (45.13) and junior Pascal Wollach (45.43) placed first and second in prelims followed by sophomore Jared White (45.51) in fourth.  Norys and White both shaved over a second off of their previous career bests.

Junior Kelly Marx earned a six-dive total of 411.60 to place second in 3-meter springboard prelims.  Junior Dan Mazzaferro also qualified, advancing to the consolation final following a 15th-place finish, earning a 369.75 from the judges.

Marx and Mazzaferro will look to chip away at the Texas lead after the Longhorns only qualified one diver into consolations.

No Tiger was able to advance to the 200 free finals.  Juniors Will Dove (1:35.75) and Gideon Louw (1:36.85) placed 32nd and 39th while Wollach was disqualified for a false start.

Auburn’s only entry into the 400 IM, sophomore Andrew Mitchell was disqualified for failing to hit the wall with both hands on a breaststroke turn.

Sophomores and juniors account for eight of the 11 individuals who made the cut to Friday night finals.  Madson was the lone senior to advance to an A final.

Action resumes at 7 p.m. CST with prelims in the 200 MR, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-meter springboard and the 800 FR.
