AUBURN - After winning six titles at the SEC Championships last week in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Auburn's Cesar Cielo has been named the CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week for the week of Feb. 18-24.
It marks the second time this season Cielo has earned the national honor after also being named National Swimmer of the Week on Feb. 13.
Cielo earned his honor after winning the 50-and 100-free events for the third consecutive year at the SEC Championships. He also set new SEC records in both events as he swam an 18.91 in the 50 free and a 41.25 in the 100 free. He actually broke the conference 100 free record twice as he broke it with a time of 41.78 during his individual race, only to break it again later in the night with a 41.25 leadoff in the 400 free relay.
The junior from St. Barbara, Brazil also led the Tigers to relay wins in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.
With his six titles won at the 2008 SEC Championships, Cielo now owns 17 SEC titles in his three years on the team, giving him the Auburn record for most SEC championships won in a career. He passes former Auburn sprinter Fred Bousquet, who finished his Auburn career with 15 SEC titles.
With the completion of the SEC Championships, the defending national champion Auburn swimming and diving teams now turn their attention to the NCAA Championships. The women head to NCAAs, March 20-22 in Columbus, Ohio, while the men's NCAA Championships will be March 27-29 in Federal Way, Wash.
