ATHENS, Ga. - Auburn diving opened the 2010 SEC Championships right, advancing all four athletes out of the preliminary round to the finals Wednesday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
"It was a really good start to the meet for us," head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "Everyone dived very well and had great performances. I'm happy for them and excited for the finals tonight."
Opening the prelims was the women's 1-meter springboard competition. Sophomore Vennie Dantin finished third with a personal-best score of 303.85, while classmate Anna Aguero took sixth with 292.25 points.
The Auburn men competed on the 3-meter springboard following the women's competition. Senior Kelly Marx put together a solid performance, finishing second with 408.25 points. Freshman Thad Ellis also qualified for the finals after taking sixth with a score of 355.60.
Alabama's Carrie Dragland came out on top in the women's 1-meter with a score of 308.05, while her teammate Aaron Fleshner finished first with 425.25 points on the 3-meter.
Auburn has won two of the last three 3-meter events at the conference championships, with Dan Mazzaferro picking up the title last season.
The women's 1-meter final begins at 6 p.m. to kick start the evening and is followed by the 200 medley relay at 6:30 p.m., men's 3-meter at 7 p.m. and 800 free relay at 7:30 p.m.
