AUBURN, Ala. - Coming off a thrilling sweep of No. 3/1 Texas at home, the No. 12/6 Auburn swimming and diving team picked up a pair of Southeastern Conference weekly honors as senior Adam Brown and junior Anna Aguero were named Male Swimmer of the Week and Female Diver of the Week, respectively.
Brown's honor is his third of the season and gives him a total of five in his career. He becomes the first swimmer in SEC history to be honored five times in a career since the award was instated in 2000. He was previously tied with former Tiger Cesar Cielo and Florida's Ryan Lochte and Conor Dwyer, all of whom have four career conference honors.
Brown continues to have a great final season at Auburn as he played a major role in the Tigers' upset over top-ranked and defending nation-champion Texas on Jan. 14. Brown picked up a pair of individual victories with the first coming in the 50 free as he logged a time of 19.87 in the win. He also won the 100 free with a time of 43.62. Brown was a member of the second-place finishing 400 medley relay (3:13.89) that finished behind Auburn's first-place finishing squad.
"I'm really proud of Adam (Brown) and all of his accomplishments so far this season," head coach Brett Hawke said. "He wants to make an impact in his final year here and his success so far is proof that he is doing so."
The honor is Aguero's first of her career and it couldn't come at a better time as she served a vital role in Auburn's upset over No.3 Texas on Jan. 13. The Moultrie, Ga., native kicked of the diving portion of the meet with a first-place finish on the one-meter springboard with a season-best score of 314.18. That mark is just six points off her school-record score. Aguero capped the day with another win, taking first on the three-meter with a career-best score of 337.65.
"This is very deserving for Anna (Aguero) and she has done a great job preparing for the season," head diving coach Jeff Shaffer
said. "She is starting to peak at the right moment as we look ahead towards championship season."
The Auburn swimming and diving team caps off the 2010-11 regular season as the team hosts SEC rival Florida Jan. 21 at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the Tigers will honor their 11 seniors prior to the meet.
