MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Auburn sophomore Kelly Marx came up short in his finals bid at the 2008 Speedo USA Diving Spring National Championships, finishing 13th in the 3-meter springboard preliminary.

"Kelly started off real strong today and was in sixth place after three rounds," said head diving coach Jeff Shaffer. "But, he had a mental mistake on his fourth dive and did not go quite as strong as normal. He bounced right back and scored solid on his final two dives, just came up a bit short."

Marx finished with a score of 340.50 in the event. Georgia's Chris Colwill won the preliminary with a score of 438.45.

"On the bright side, this is Kelly's highest place at nationals and there is a lot to be taken from this meet into next season," said Shaffer.

Also competing at the spring national championships is Auburn sophomore Dan Mazzaferro, the 2008 SEC champion on the platform. Mazzaferro will compete in the platform preliminary on Friday at 11 a.m.
