Undergraduate Experience
Due to changes in the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the Auburn
Sports Medicine program will no longer be able to accept internship candidates
for route to certification. The Auburn Sports Medicine department is not
establishing a curriculum in Athletic Training and the internship route
to certification is being phased out by the NATA. Currently, to become
certified by the NATA through an internship, student athletic trainers'
needed to begin obtaining their hours by the Fall of 2001. Students must
earn a bachelor's degree by Fall of 2003, have two years experience as
a student athletic trainer and complete the 1500 hours of internship as
required by the NATA to sit for the certification exam.
Although, there is no longer a student athletic training internship
program at Auburn University, we are still accepting applications from
students who are interested in Sports Medicine. Students have the opportunity
to volunteer and gain valuable experience in the field of athletic training.
As a Sports Medicine Department Volunteer at Auburn, you will gain experience
in assisting in the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
Additionally volunteers will be required to learn athletic training skills
so they can competently assist the athletic training staff. Introductory
inservices are offered each Fall Semester to help orient incoming students
to the profession of athletic training and weekly teaching sessions will
be provided by the athletic training staff throughout the year. While a
Sports Medicine Student Volunteer at Auburn, you are required to maintain
current CPR Certification. Athletic Training is a profession which takes
a great deal of dedication and work without much credit or thanks. You
will need to spend a large portion of your free time in the training room
if you wish to become knowledgeable about the field of Sports Medicine.
