Today was the 100 freestyle final for Marcelo. A dream come true really, swimming in front of your home crowd in the blue ribbon event of the program. We've had a winner in this event before, Rowdy Gaines, an Auburn legend.
Marcelo woke from his nap feeling great. Warmed up for the event very well. He was even in a great state of mind. I really think we looked at the race plan a little too hard instead of just turning off our brain completely. Easier said than done when looking for tenths of seconds.
I know he wanted it so much and my heart breaks for that fact, but 8th in the Olympic games is nothing to be ashamed of; it's an outstanding achievement! I just know he wanted the podium so desperately!
He'll learn and grow and be better for it, we all know that, but for now it hurts!
Tomorrow we have a full day with Auburn athletes swimming the 100 fly, 50 free and 200 back. Should be a great day again for us!
