Today was our first official day of practice with the entire Brazilian swimming team. We have a choice of two pools. One right next to the hotel (25m) or one about 20 min drive away (50m). Marcelo actually learned to swim at the pool close to the hotel so it was very surreal to now be back preparing for the Olympic Games in the same pool.
The day starts with breakfast at 10am, then we were off to a crossfit gym at 1pm. The guys have a set routine as instructed by our strength coach at Auburn, Bryan Karkoska. He's the best in the business and the guys know it, so I'm just there to observe.
After a 30-minute gym session we headed straight to the pool for a power workout. Basically the guys do a series of short burst where they transfer what they did in the gym into the pool. This transfer of power is what makes them so fast when they need it the most!
Lunch was at 3:30, then they were off for a nap from 4-5:30pm. We have a small snack at 6 and then get on the bus to head to the Olympic size pool. This is where the whole team gets together for the majority of their work in preparation for Rio. We are in the pool from 8-10, then head back to the hotel for dinner at 10:45pm. I know this seems late, but considering that finals don't start till 10pm in Rio we need to adjust our clocks forward a few hours. We are getting to bed around 1am, and then we'll do the whole thing again tomorrow.
The boys did well today, I'm keeping them focused on what's really important, swimming fast when it counts!
