Joe Joe Petrone is in his fourth year at the helm of the Auburn University Sports Medicine staff. As Director of Sports Medicine, Petrone heads up one of the top sports medicine staffs in the country, which is comprised of 12 certified full-time staff and 11 certified graduate assistants. Petrone also serves as a member of AU athletics senior administrative staff. A native of Nashville, TN, Petrone earned his Bachelor's Degree from Vanderbilt University in 1980. In 1994, he received his Master's of Science Degree from the University of South Florida.

Petrone joined the Auburn family after spending seven years as the Head Athletic Trainer at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. He was responsible for overseeing medical care given to the athletes of 18 different Blue Raider varsity sports and performed various administrative duties.

Prior to MTSU, Petrone spent five years as the athletic trainer and therapist at The HealthSouth Sports Medicine Center in Tampa, Florida. He was responsible for the rehabilitation of all injuries and in charge of the sports medicine outreach program. Petrone was the assistant athletic trainer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1987 to 1996. While with the Buccaneers, he saw to the care and prevention of player injuries and handled all road trip needs for his team physicians.

From 1981 to 1987, Petrone was the assistant athletic trainer at the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, he assisted with the football program and was the head athletic trainer for basketball. For five years, Petrone worked as an athletic trainer for the New York Yankees Fantasy Camp and also donated his time and knowledge as an athletic trainer for Florida College and Hillsborough High School football. During the summers of 1979 and 1980, Petrone served as a summer assistant athletic trainer for the New York Jets Football Club in Hempstead, New York.

A certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Petrone is also a member of the Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association, and the Alabama Athletic Trainers' Association.

Petrone and his wife Allyson currently reside in Auburn. They have twin sons, Chas and Michael.
